Investing in the Health & Leadership of Our Youth
Partner : National Health Mission
Implementing Organization : Pahal Jan Sahyog Vikas Sansthan
Target Group : Adolescents (10–19 Years)
Timeline : 3-Year Intensive Program
Location : Barwani District, Madhya Pradesh
Adolescence is not just a phase — it is a turning point.
In collaboration with the National Health Mission, Pahal implemented the Rashtriya Kishore Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK) to equip young people with the knowledge, life skills, and safe support systems needed to grow into confident, healthy, and responsible adults.
Our Holistic Focus Areas
We moved beyond clinical care to address the real, lived experiences of adolescents:
- Nutrition: Tackling anemia and promoting balanced diets during critical growth years.
- Sexual & Reproductive Health (SRH): Age-appropriate education, counseling, and myth-busting conversations.
- Mental Health: Safe spaces to openly discuss stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges.
- Substance Abuse Prevention: Building awareness and resilience to resist addiction.
- Injuries & Violence: Addressing gender-based violence and promoting physical safety.
Guiding Principles of Implementation
- Adolescent Leadership: Youth were not beneficiaries — they were leaders. Peer Educators (“Saathiya”) facilitated discussions and awareness sessions.
- Equity & Inclusion: Ensuring tribal adolescents had equal access to credible health information.
- Gender Equity: Challenging stereotypes and promoting equal health rights for girls and boys.
- Allied Partnerships: Collaboration with schools, sports clubs, frontline workers, and village elders to create a strong support ecosystem.
Key Program Outcomes
- Life Skills: Improved decision-making and negotiation skills among tribal youth
- Healthcare Linkage: Increased utilization of Adolescent Friendly Health Clinics (AFHCs)
- Empowerment: Rise in adolescent-led community health awareness drives
Lessons Learned: Engaging the Next Generation
Peer Influence is Powerful
Adolescents respond better to peers than authority figures. Strengthening the Saathiya network proved to be the most impactful strategy.
Privacy Matters
Confidentiality is critical when discussing reproductive or mental health. Organizing Adolescent Health Days in neutral community spaces significantly improved participation.
Integrated Nutrition Messaging Works
Linking nutrition to sports performance resonated strongly with boys, while connecting iron levels to energy and well-being resonated with girls — demonstrating the importance of context-sensitive communication.
The Bigger Picture
RKSK was not just about awareness — it was about ownership.
By combining health education, leadership building, and system linkages, the program ensured that adolescents in Barwani are not only healthier today but are also equipped to lead healthier communities tomorrow.
